Rooted in a culture of acceptance and inclusion

With an increasing and country-wide need for effective treatment and support for people experiencing drug and alcohol addiction, in 1984 Phoenix Futures expanded their proven Therapeutic Community residential rehab service to Sheffield.

Phoenix Futures had established professional links with the University of Sheffield and was supported by the then Professor of Psychiatry, Alec Jenner to secure a lease on a large house in the leafy suburb of Ranmoor with the intention of opening a Therapeutic Community.

The introduction of Phoenix Futures Services in Ranmoor was met with unease and resistance among some of the residents, who feared a ‘drug treatment facility’ being set up in their neighbourhood. Learning of the opposition, the clergy and congregation of St Johns Church, Ranmoor set up a charity called Phoenix Association, with the aim of fostering understanding and building welcoming bridges between the local community and the staff and people in treatment at Phoenix Futures Sheffield.

For the last 37 years, the Phoenix Association have continuously provided help and support to people starting their recovery journey at Phoenix Futures Sheffield by providing targeted financial assistance to people in treatment and to graduates wishing to rebuild their lives in Sheffield, supporting education and innovation and fostering strong links between people in recovery in Sheffield and the local community.

We are a registered charity that is entirely independent, constitutionally, and financially from Phoenix Futures. We are a small independent committee of volunteers, who are enthusiastic and give our time freely to support recovery in our hometown.

Many of the people that we support come from severely disadvantaged backgrounds where opportunities have been extremely limited, the support that we provide enables people to learn, grow, develop, broaden their horizons, find purpose and have enriching often first-time experiences that help to establish a solid foundation on which to rebuild their lives in recovery.
